Review: Halo Top | Raindow Swirl

There's been a lot of talk about Halo Top lately (hence this review). First, they took the world by storm with their first 6 flavors, then they dropped 10 new flavors to spice things up. Now, a year later, they dropped on us another 7 flavors, with an additional two seasonally-inspired flavors to top it off (9 additional flavors total).

If you wanted a break from the normal hustle and bustle of ice cream flavors, those having anything to do with chocolate, peanut butter, and similar "dessert-y" flavors, then Halo Top hooked you up this go-round.

Rainbow swirl is Halo Top's version of Sherbet, containing three different fruit flavors. The ingredients list doesn't actually list any fruit, which means technically it's a "fruit-flavored" sherbet, but this is how they can get the calories and macros to be so good. The three different flavors seem to be orange, lime, and what my best guess is raspberry.

I'll say this: I'm not a huge fan of sherbet, but this was pleasantly delicious. If you are a fan of sherbet then I think you will find this flavor to be a favorite go-to. It is creamy, very flavorful, and you can taste each of the fruit flavors enough by themselves that no one flavor overpowers the rest. Not to mention, they blend together nicely when you get a scoop of all three.

The creaminess was a bit uncharacteristic of sherbet. The use of dairy and cream gave me the impression it was more of a creamsicle-type deal, instead of a standard sherbet, flavored-ice, dessert.

Similar to many of the new flavors, it didn't require as much rest time at room temperature before it was the perfect consistency to be enjoyed. This is likely an indication that Halo Top has improved their manufacturing process since their initial release.

Rainbow swirl comes in as one of the 240cal flavors, and is likely my favorite of the lowest-calorie options. This one will be a great addition to your nutrition regimen!

In thinking about how this flavor could have been improved, aside from reducing the creaminess as mentioned previously, I honestly think they did the best they could for a sherbet.

Overall: 8/10 - A bit too creamy for a sherbet, but a nice reprieve from the standard chocolate/vanilla base and a good flavor to try if you're looking for something new.

Truvia, or erythritol, is a sugar alcohol that tastes like sugar but has very few calories. It is absorbed almost entirely in the small intestine and is excreted through urine. Erythritol has been deemed safe for consumption, and does not cause digestive issues like other sugar alcohols in quantities less than 50g per day.
